The First Pan-European Festival Marathon – 2014

The First Pan-European Festival Marathon - From the Urals to the Atlantic- was held in June, 2014 and was timed to the Year of Culture in Russia. The motto of the Marathon was: “For the unity of the cultural space of Europe from the Urals to the Atlantic”.

Festival Marathon-2014 was held under the aegis of the Chairman of the Organizational Committee of the Year of Culture in Russia, Chairman of the Federation Council, Ms. Valentina Matvienko. The initiative of the Marathon was initiated by the Russian Parliamentary European Club and the Federal Agency “Rossotrudnichestvo”.

The Marathon was supported by the Government of the Perm Krai and started on June 12 (the Day of Russia National Holiday) in the city of Perm, which is located close to the geographical border between Europe and Asia. Prior to the start of the Marathon, an international conference, devoted to the securing and promotion of the Russian language, had been held in Perm.

The route of the Marathon got through Perm, Riga (Cultural Capital of the EU-2014), Prague, Vienna (Russian cultural seasons), Bratislava, Malta, London (Russian-British Culture year), and Lisbon, with Moscow as a final destination.

The main symbol of the first Marathon – the Staff, was solemnly placed in the Perm Krai museum.

The Marathon events were supported by UNESCO, Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Senate of Austria, parliaments of Slovakia and Portugal, Administrations of Riga, Prague, Vienna and Lisbon.

In the course of the Marathon many concerts, exhibitions, presentations, negotiations, conferences and round tables took place. Total amount of participants of all events exceeded 25.000 people. All events of the Marathon – 2014 were covered live by the Internet. This Marathon was also covered by top Russian and European mass media.
